NASA sends the ‘Artemis 1′ rocket to the Moon: A new chapter in human lunar exploration begins

After a wait of several months, the “Artemis” rocket flew this morning to the Moon. Artemis is NASA’s project to land humans on the Moon for the first time since 1972

After a wait of several months, the “Artemis” rocket flew this morning to the Moon. The historic event kicks off a journey that will send an uncrewed spacecraft around the Moon, paving the way for NASA to return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time in half a century.
This spacecraft, known as Orion, is uncrewed for this flight, but if all goes well, humans will climb aboard for future missions to the lunar surface.

We are going. For the first time, the NASA_SLS rocket and NASA_Orion fly together. Artemis begins a new chapter in human lunar exploration.’ – NASA announces.

Wednesday’s flight followed two previous launch attempts in August and September, which were aborted during the countdown due to technical glitches.

This mission also marks the debut flight of the SLS rocket as the most powerful ever to reach Earth orbit, achieving 15% more thrust than the Saturn V rocket that powered NASA’s 20th century moon landings. Its objective is to launch an astronaut capsule towards the Moon.

The long-term goal of the Artemis program is to establish a space station and lunar base camp on the Moon so that astronauts can eventually spend much longer periods of time there. Technology has improved massively since the Apollo program in 1961, which means there’s a better chance this time around to learn even more about the Moon and space in general.

Artemis I is a technology demonstration, so there won’t be a crew on board this time, but if all goes according to plan on the mission, then Artemis II, due to fly in 2024, will most likely have humans.
