A study shows that a glass of beetroot juice a day is beneficial in reducing blood pressure in people with high blood pressure (hypertension). The study in question noted that three hours after drinking this juice, volunteers showed a reduction in blood pressure that lasted up to 24 hours. The researchers found that “inorganic nitrate and beet juice supplementation were associated with a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure.” Raw beets contain high levels of nitrate (NO3), which the body uses when needed to convert to biologically active nitrate (NO2) and nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide is a key molecule that our body produces to help all of our cells communicate with each other, transmitting signals throughout the body. It penetrates the underlying muscles and relaxes the arteries. Therefore, nitric oxide plays a critical role in blood pressure and overall blood circulation. In this process it is also useful for inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress.
