Curlew pelican in Prespa Lakes, the largest colony in the world
The European census of the curly pelican in the lakes of Prespa has started. Did you know that the Prespa Lakes are home to the largest curlew pelican colony in the entire world?
Although on the Albanian side of Prespa the conditions are not so suitable for the nesting of the curled pelican, this territory serves best as a resting area fed by a considerable number of individuals of this type.
As every year, the PPNEA team, together with AdZM Korçë and representatives of the “Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Prespa” project, during the weekend participated in the monitoring of this type of symbol along the perimeter of the Prespa lakes.
At the end of this process, it was possible to count more than 300 individuals of the curly pelican, a common number for the Albanian side of Prespa.
These lakes are the only ecosystem in Albania where during this period both types of pelicans, such as the curly one and the pink one, are regularly seen, which offer extraordinary views to anyone who visits Prespa.
