The coronavirus has infected thousands of people and killed hundreds of them. Panic remains high. The BBC explains 5 things you should know about the virus.

You can eat Chinese food

There is no need to avoid Chinese food and any goods that come from this country. It is also safe to receive parcels and letters from China. The virus cannot survive that long on these surfaces.

You cannot get the virus from animals

There is no evidence that pets can be affected by this new coronavirus. However, this does not mean that you should not wash your hands after touching them.

Rarely becomes a ‘killer’

Most people have mild symptoms (cough and high fever) and recover. However, the virus has made some people seriously ill with pneumonia and breathing problems, killing a small number. You have to remember that even the flu that circulates every year, it kills people The risk of contracting the coronavirus is very small compared to the flu.

There is no cure

There is no specific drug or vaccine against the new virus. Antibiotics don’t work as well. Treatment options exist, but most people recover on their own. Scientists are working hard on the vaccine, but it will take time as the tests need to be done. The elderly and people with other health problems are more vulnerable.

Face masks don’t do much

There is little evidence that masks work. This is because they are very cheap and do not cover the eyes. Also, you can’t keep them for a long time. To protect yourself:

  • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze.
  • Throw the beans in a closed bin.
  • Always wash your hands with soap.
  • Keep your distance from people who cough and sneeze.
