The diesel is gone, the hybrid is coming: with the electrified version, the Japanese SUV model says goodbye to the diesel engine once and for all, but remains equally balanced, at least in the city

Paraphrasing a famous commercial, the new CR-V Hybrid has said no to the diesel engine and yes to electrification. This is completely in line with the company’s strategy, which will abandon the diesel engine for good by 2021, replacing it with a range of hybrid and plug-in engines (soon we will see the debut of the electric model of clean). The Japanese company’s target is another twin-engine SUV: the compatriot Toyota RAV4, similar in size and philosophy. Inside the hood of the Honda SUV, which was launched in February, is an electric motor with 184 hp and 315 Nm, as well as a two-liter gasoline engine with 145 hp and 175 Nm. There are three operating modes, automatically selected by the machine itself. EV (100% electric drive, with two kilometers of autonomy), hybrid – the four-cylinder disconnects from the wheels and starts the alternator which feeds the electric – and endothermic – engine.

In essence, however, the car makes more use of the zero-emissions engine compared to competing hybrid systems: the two-liter engine is, in fact, used primarily to generate electricity. So it’s almost always electric driving the car, unless maximum performance is required.

HOW NOISE IS REDUCED

If you don’t overdo it on the gas and cruise at a constant speed, the electric motor brings out its best: it delivers agility and a powerful torque, supported by the thermal engine. On the other hand, the latter tries its best, working in high modes and inevitably increasing the noise, especially at stable speeds. Fitting a noise reduction device as well as additional insulating materials, however, make the CR-V Hybrid just as quiet. In order to increase the comfort even more, the calibration of the structure, which is well supported, also plays a role. In hybrid mode, consumption is not bad in the city (about 16 km/liter shows the computer in the cabin), but on the highway, it drops to 12 km per liter. The price? It starts from 32,900 euros, a figure that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian recognition, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control. Also included in the series are 18-inch discs, dark corner warning, fully LED headlights and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. To have integral traction, the Elegance Navi configuration is mandatory: with it the value reaches 38,000 euros.

IT DOES EVEN WITHOUT GEARBOX

The Honda model’s hybrid system is called i-Mmd, an acronym for Intelligent Multi Mode Drive: it combines a two-liter, Atkinson-cycle endothermic engine that drives the generator, a compact electric motor that drives the wheels, and a 1.4-liter lithium-ion battery. kWh. The alternator supplies energy to the electric motor and charges the accumulator, while at high speeds, the gasoline engine can directly pull the wheels when the friction established between them is interrupted. All this is accomplished without a gearbox, which has been replaced by a fixed-ratio reducer. On request, we can have integral traction with the classic transmission shaft, which can shift up to 60% of the torque to the rear axle.

Two selectors are placed behind the steering wheel to adjust the regenerative deceleration: as the deceleration increases, the energy recovered and stored in the accumulator is added. Over the generation, the CR-V has gained a full 3 cm in step, all in favor of interior space, equal to that of the gasoline version: the hybrid version, however, offers less space in the trunk, from 561 , offers 497 liters, because it has made room for batteries.
