Scientists have discovered that people who live close to nature are more likely to live longer. “Bright Side” shows how mother nature protects people.
Better sleep and lower blood pressure aren’t the only benefits
Previous studies have shown that there can be many benefits to living in a green neighborhood. They include improved sleep and lower blood pressure. It may even reduce the risk of some types of diabetes and premature birth.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 108,000 women. The study was conducted from 2000 to 2008. The scientists analyzed the rate and causes of death of the participants and compared the information with satellite images from different time periods that showed the level of greenery around the women’s home.
Women who live close to nature have a 13% lower rate of cancer-related deaths
Women whose homes were surrounded by more plants had a 12% lower death rate. When looking at specific causes, the researchers found that deaths from kidney, respiratory and cancer diseases were 41%, 34% and 13% lower among women living in greener areas.
According to scientists, women who live in a more natural environment do not fully experience the negative impact of urban noise, heat and air pollution. They may have more opportunities for physical activity. And they have lower stress levels and improved mental health.
Men benefit too
These findings prove that plants have a protective effect on women’s health. Although this study only looked at women, there is evidence that men can also benefit from them. For example, men die less often from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases when they live in greener areas.
