The creation of the continents – three billion years ago
The emergence of the continents was a key moment in the history of life on Earth, not least because they are where most people live. The first continents on Earth were formed 3 billion years ago.
The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, estimates the age of the cardboards, as they are otherwise called the first terrains that appeared on the surface, writes Livescience.
The researchers analyzed data from the Singhbhum craton in India, made up of igneous rocks and sediment dating back 3.6-3.2 billion years. According to this study, even this craton is older than previously thought by previous studies, dating back to about 2.5 billion years.
The verdict explains that in terms of the mechanism that affected the rise of the first terrains, it could have been a very high magma expansion and the ascent of the Earth’s silica-rich crust. According to the study, this is a very different mechanism than the one that controls the movements of the continental plates today.
