Persecuted: We are not sorry for the death of an executioner, we are sorry that he was not punished

The widow of the dictator, Nexhmije Hoxha, died yesterday at the age of 99, exactly 35 years after her husband, not only in life but also in crime, passed away. She died in her bed, in deep old age, without any gnawing in her conscience. He never regretted the extrajudicial killings, and he never apologized to those still searching for the remains of relatives. In the 90s, the half-hearted justice of that time would have sentenced her to several years in prison, which were nothing compared to what tens of thousands of prisoners and exiles had experienced for 50 years at the hands of the system that her husband established and blessed. Ironically, just like yesterday 69 years ago, the communist dictatorship would shoot 22 intellectuals, among them a woman, Sabiha Kasimatin, in the suburbs of Tirana. A patriotic woman, educated in Italy for biology. In her beginnings, Nexhmije Hoxha was a lyceum girl from Dibra who attended the girls’ lyceum “Queen Mother” and Sabiha Kasimati was her teacher. The dictator’s widow did not say a word at the time, although she was well aware of Kasimati’s anti-fascist convictions. Nexhmije Hoxha herself, according to recently released documents, was a member of the fascist party in 1940-1941, and that same year, i.e. in 1941, immediately after the creation of the Communist Party, she became one of its first members. While she was alive, she never mentioned this fact, although quite a few other Albanians were killed and imprisoned for such a thing. After the end of the war, she held leading positions in the hierarchy of the time, among them the head of the Democratic Front, which was responsible for the internment and deportation of citizens.

The persecuted

The head of the former political persecuted, Besim Ndregjoni, has reacted to the death of Nexhmije Hoxha, the wife of the former dictator Enver Hoxha, who passed away today at the age of 99. In a television appearance, Ndregjoni claimed that today (yesterday) an executioner of the Albanian society, who according to him committed crimes that were not punished by the post-communist Albanian governments, left his life. “I would call it a feeling of emptiness. That an executioner left the Albanian society, who was not punished for the crimes he committed, but was sentenced for coffee. A masquerade of post-communist Albanian governments not to punish her and her husband Enver Hoxha’s crimes. When an executioner dies there is no feeling, but you feel very sad when after 30 years of political pluralism, 4500 families are looking for the remains of their people and this irresponsible political class, instead of finding these remains, has left these family members in black I would accept anything, but of course Nexhmie Hoxha, even in the last year of her death, spoke with a hatred towards the politically persecuted with her book. So what feeling can you have for an executioner,” he said.

History

Albania’s communist history is the saddest in Eastern Europe, as it was also the most brutal dictatorship. That system, where the queen’s crown was worn by the woman who died yesterday, produced quite a few victims. Children have died in internment camps, pregnant women have been shot, mothers have been forced to bury their babies. All this because somewhere one of their relatives had expressed a word against the system, or wanted to escape from the strings of the dictates by running away. Fathers have been killed and sons imprisoned, or worse. The boys were killed and the old men who were forced to work in the marshes of Maliqi, Lushnja and Tepelena were interned. There is no end to the stories and the line of those who tell. Many of the former persecuted have received financial compensation over the years, insufficient but they have received. And it’s still not enough. Compensation is not only material but also moral, and the latter has been lacking. The history of Romania shows us this best. Nicola Ceausescu and his wife Helena were punished for what they did. It did not happen in Albania. Whether the dictator or what he left behind, they both died in their beds.

Dervishi: He started as a birder, continued as a fascist, ended as a 99-çe

Historian Kastriot Dervishi, through a post on Facebook, has made a summary of who Nexhmije Hoxha was. “Nexhmije Hoxha, the wife of the most ferocious dictator the Albanian land has seen, the one who brought incalculable damage to the country, damage that not even the invaders caused, died today indeed. The man who was as responsible as her husband will no longer continue to propagate the criminal ideal. From her and her husband, thousands of families were left without relatives, while the country sank into poverty and crime. She started her life as a birder. As a careerist, she also dressed as a fascist. He continued and ended up as a communist. She was the head of communist propaganda and the closest supporter and inspiration of Enver Hoxha in his crimes. Her life was left with a 99”, says Dervishi.

Chika: I don’t feel sorry for an executioner, society was cleaned of waste

The head of the Anti-Communist and Ex-Persecuted Association Nebil Çika stated yesterday that Nexhmije Hoxha was the initiator of many crimes during the dictatorship and was unrepentant until the end of her life for what had happened in this country. “The part that was an accomplice in the dictator’s crimes is not mentioned. She was a member of the fascist party. She was the initiator of many crimes and unrepentant until the end of her life for the crimes committed by her husband and the dictatorship. She was one of the most dangerous perpetrators of crimes against humanity in Albania. It is a cleansing from society, from this kind of waste that has taken the lives of millions of Albanians. Communism has deep roots in Albania. It still had supporters, or perpetrators of the crime of communism, and they are still in power. Authors of crimes against humanity are today in the highest leadership positions of the Albanian state. I can’t say I’m sorry for her death though. I think there are many deep roots of communism in the country, not only in human resources. Albania has not been able to break with the communist dictatorship, as it has not punished the persons responsible for the crimes.” – said Chika.
