The Etruscan gods emerge from the mud

They were there silently, since 2500 years ago. Covered by hardened mud, which together with the thermal waters have kept the statues of Etruscan and Roman gods in an extraordinary condition.

Once beautiful and worshiped, until the fourth century, when Christianity described them as blasphemous works, but did not destroy them, it hid them in the baths of one of the most famous thermal centers of Italy, in San Casciano dei Bagni.

The works of archaeologists accidentally brought to light these objects, which represent one of the most important discoveries of the century.

Thousands of coins and various objects, and especially 24 bronze statues of various sizes, have been preserved in amazing conditions.

‘A discovery that will write history’, commented the archaeologist Jacopo Tolli, not only for the bronze statues reminiscent of the famous statues found in Riace in Calabria, but also for the rare evidence in the Etruscan language, which shows that this mysterious language has coexisted more than thought with the Latin language, which then became dominant throughout the Mediterranean.

The excavation site has been closed and will reopen in the spring where more finds are expected. Meanwhile, archaeologists from all over the world are expected to cooperate as they will have endless material during this winter.
