The first tourist to go to the moon
Elon Musk’s company SpaceX has revealed the first private traveler that plans to fly around the moon.
“I choose to go to the moon,” said Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, 42. It is expected to be launched by the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), a launch system that was unveiled by Musk in 2016.
The mission, currently scheduled for 2023, will mark the first visit to the Moon by humans since NASA’s Apollo 17 in 1972. The announcement was made at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, on Tuesday.
The company said the flight represented “an important step for ordinary people who dream of space travel”. Earlier on Twitter, Musk had hinted that the passenger would be from Japan.
Only 24 people have visited the moon, all Americans. Some of the Apollo missions orbited the Moon without landing on it. However, this journey will rely on a rocket that has not yet been built and Musk has said: “It is not 100% certain that we will make this flight”.
