What is a virus?

A virus is a very small collection of proteins and genetic material. There are many, many viruses in the world, and one that many people get every year is influenza, or the flu, which infects 10 to 20 percent of the population each year.

How is a virus spread?

Something like the flu is spread when people sneeze or cough and the virus spreads from person to person. Or when they leave infected material on surfaces, such as infected mucous. That is why it is very important to wash your hands. There are other viruses that are spread by direct contact, when people hug or kiss. There are also viruses that are spread through sexual contact, such as HIV.

What it Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

According to WHO, most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
